Youth Ministry
Assumption Parish has been active with youth activities for many years and then approximately 8 years ago the parish adopted the Comprehensive Youth Ministry Model, “prescribed” by the Archdiocese of Vancouver.
Youth Ministry is divided into Junior and Senior Youth with the Jr. program being named God Squad. God Squad is for Grades 6 & 7 with the Senior Youth program including gr. 8 – 12. Many of the senior youth work as Youth Leaders for the God Squad activities.
Our parish has a wonderful Catholic Elementary/Middle School and a strong CCD program for those students not at the school. These two institutions cover the catechesis component well and of course the gr. 7 Confirmation class spends much time on Justice and Service. God Squad therefore spends a lot of time in fun activities intertwined with spiritual messages and themes.
Our senior program has been well established over the years with each student having a secret adult prayer partner from Grade. 8 – 12, each student receives a birthday card from YM, students participating in the Youth Mass Sunday night, and a variety of programs.
One of the “star” programs is called “Salt & Light” and is fashioned after the Alpha program. It runs once a week from September to December.
Students begin with dinner at 6:00pm followed by fellowship and icebreaker games. Then follows a teaching, testimony or talk followed by small group discussion. This program has proven to be a highlight for YM.
There are many ongoing special events as well. Service projects held locally but also trips to Van. to visit the various Soup Kitchens and Agape Street Ministries. We attend retreats on Quadra and Vancouver Island as well as attending the many special events put on by the YM office of the Vancouver Archdiocese – Youth Day, Searching in the Spirit, Youth Leader,(both summer camps) Freedom and many more.
Our parish has sent groups of young people and chaperones to World Youth Days in Denver, Philippines, Rome, Toronto and now this year Germany.
The key to our success here in Assumption Parish with Youth Ministry is prayer and trust in the Lord, a very supportive Pastor, many hardworking and caring adults, and enthusiastic youth.
